Telephone Scam Alert

TELEPHONE SCAM ALERT

Woodbridge Police are investigating several incidents involving “spoofing” in which residents have recently reported receiving suspicious telephone calls being displayed on their Caller ID system as having originated from the Woodbridge Police Department with our telephone number.  In one case, the caller claimed to be from an out of state law enforcement agency and was inquiring about the resident’s social security number and other personal identification information, fraudulently claiming that the resident was wanted on an outstanding arrest warrant.  Other residents have reported receiving calls from someone claiming to be from the Social Security Administration asking to verify their social security number as their account has been “suspended”.

The Woodbridge Police Department and the Social Security Administration would not request this type of information over the telephone.

Residents are reminded to be alert for such scams and to contact the Police Department directly at (203) 387-2511 to confirm the legitimacy of any telephone calls they feel may be suspicious in nature.
